A former media professional with experience in casting, marketing and sales, and on-air reporting, Hampton Barringer Luzak now has a career restoring and selling historical homes. Outside of her work activities, Hampton Luzak supports several nonprofit organizations, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

In addition to overseeing programs and activities for companion animals, the ASPCA maintains its Farm Animal Department to ensure the humane treatment of animals raised for food. As part of this work, the organization recently teamed up with the Vermont Law School’s Center for Agriculture and Food Systems to update the Farm Animal Welfare Certification Guide.

Created to help farmers understand the value of obtaining welfare certification, the Farm Animal Welfare Certification Guide provides information on three established certification programs. The programs are Animal Welfare Approved, Global Animal Partnership, and Certified Humane.

Along with comparing the key differences between the three programs, the guide features case studies from each one and explains the steps involved in the certification processes. It also provides information about funding options for farmers pursuing certification, and provides evidence demonstrating that the market for welfare-certified products is growing.

The updated guide features four new case studies examining welfare-certified farms, and offers additional information on the certification processes. It also includes an expanded section to help farmers and farm-related businesses identify funding sources for welfare-certified farming. More information about the guide and the ASPCA’s other farm-related activities is available at www.aspca.org.
